SPEED OF LIGHT APPARATUS
The system consists of a transmitter and receiver on a PC board and a 25m long, 1mm diameter sheathed polymer fiber. Connection of the fiber is achieved simply by pushing the cut ends into an aperture in the LED (630nm output) and photodetector housings. A dual trace oscilloscope and a 6 VDC (smoothed) power supply are required for speed of light determinations. Investigations of modulation, low frequency transfer of analog voltage, and transmission of speech or music using fiber optics require a signal generator and a frequency meter. Recommended accessories include: A power supply to provide up to 6 VDC to the board and a Dual Trace Oscilloscope (which is required for the speed of light experiment). The system is supplied with instructions covering a range of experiments which include speed of light determination, and the transmission of a computer program via the optical fiber link.
