DEMONSTRATE ALPHA PARTICLE SCATTERING WITH RUTHERFORD SCATTERING APPARATUS TEL RS820 Rutherford Scattering Apparatus
The Rutherford Scattering Apparatus allows students to repeat the famous alpha particle scattering experiment which was fundamental to the discovery of the structure of the atom. The apparatus is a clear acrylic plastic cylindrical chamber 5.5 inches in diameter and 9.8 inches in length. At one end of the chamber is an alpha particle source, a collimator to produce fine beam particles, and a piece of gold foil to scatter the beam. At the opposite end of the chamber is a removable cap on which is placed a sheet of alpha particle sensitive film. During an experiment the particle beam emerges from the collimator and is scattered by the gold atoms in the foil. Traveling the length of the tube the beam strikes the film on which are recorded the impacts. Particles which strike the film appear as clear spots in a red background after development in a caustic soda bath. Five sheets of the non-light sensitive film are included with each apparatus. The alpha particle source (Po-210) is installed in the chamber. A reticule is also included to lay over the detecting film to define the scattering angle. Processing Film develops in 2.5 N Sodium Hydroxide. Beam Angle 2.5° Deflecting Angle ±2° symmetrically around the axis. Scattering Foil Gold 4.5 x 10-5 cm thick. Dimensions 15 h x 14 w x 25 l cm (5.9 x 5.5 x 9.8) inches). Weight .7 kg (1.6 lbs.) net.
Supporting Equipment Required Small mechanical vacuum pump to evacuate the chamber, stereo microscope 20-50x to read the films, beaker and heater for film processing. TEL RS821 Alpha Particle Detecting Film (10 cm circular) Five sheets of alpha particle sensitive film cut in 10 cm circular disks to fit into the RS820 Rutherford Scattering Apparatus.
